JOB

Physicist

Physicists study the properties, changes, and interactions of matter and energy. In their work, physics is applied in various ways in industry, in laboratories and in the healthcare system, for example. It is also common for physicists to teach and perform administrative duties, the latter often in collaboration with engineers and other technicians, as the subjects often call for interdisciplinary solutions.

Physicists often specialize in areas such as atomic physics, nuclear physics, optics, quantum mechanics, string theory, astrophysics, computer physics, thermodynamics, statistical physics and elementary particle physics.

Main tasks

• explain the results of experiments according known theories and laws
• seeking new knowledge through experiments
• technological development
• applying theories and experiments to solve practical problems
• research, testing and analysis

Competence requirements

Physicists need to have a good basic knowledge of science and an interest in research, as well as being skilled in finding solutions. Meticulous and disciplined work methods, an understanding of statistics, and skills in a variety of computer programs are also important. A physicist must be able to work as part of a team and to manage projects, but also to work independently. It is important to be able to present the results of research to others.

Study

Nám í eðlisfræði til BS – gráðu er þriggja ára háskólanám. Framhaldsnám er einnig í boði til meistara- og doktorsgráðu.
