Disinfection technology

Disinfection technology is a study program at secondary school level. The program focuses on training accuracy in working methods, reliability and the ability to work independently in sterilizing devices and utensils within the healthcare sector. It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.

Study

Studies in disinfection technology have been offered at Fjölbrautaskólinn í Ármúla as part of Heilbrigðisskólinn’s study program.

A “Disinfection technology gateway“ has also been available, intended for people of 22 years of age or older who wish to have work experience assessed to shorten their studies. A minimum of two years of work experience must be demonstrated.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools, but good Icelandic language skills are also required. Students should have reached the age of 18 when they start the workplace part of the program.

Curriculum

Disinfection technology studies are divided into general subjects, general healthcare subjects, specialty subjects for disinfection technicians and vocational training. The average study period is two years; three semesters at school and 15 weeks of workplace learning at a healthcare institution after completing the school studies – see more about the workplace learning.

After graduation

Three semesters of study at school are followed by fifteen weeks of workplace learning under the guidance of a working disinfection technician.

Disinfection technology studies prepares student for specialized jobs in sterilizing equipment and utensils in healthcare institutions and in healthcare companies.
