Archivists work in the registration and storing of letters and documents. The work consists of organizing document categories and access to documents, deciding who can work with the documents, what should be kept and what can be disposed of.

As an archivist, you could work in an archive such as the National Archives of Iceland, or the archives of universities, municipalities or other offices and institutions. The work is often in collaboration with the parties who deliver documents for preservation, donors to archives, users and others.

Main tasks
  • identify document origin and preservation process
  • preserving documents of historical, legal, cultural and academic value
  • considering different preservation methods
  • preparing catalogues of archives and assisting in searching for sources
  • preparing a data deletion plan
Competence requirements

Archivists need to have organizational skills and critical thinking as well as independent and meticulous working methods. It is an advantage to have an interest in and knowledge of history, ethnography and administration.

Study

Practical archival science is taught at the University of Iceland as an additional diploma after completing a BA degree.
