Set builders build sets based on set designers’ working drawings. The work is largely based on the fact that in most cases objects are not being built for real use, but as part of a set and theatrical production. A large part of sets is generally made of wood, but materials such as plastic, cardboard and iron are also used.
A set designer can work in theaters, in television or film production.
Set designers need to be able to read working drawings and have a good sense of practical work. It is beneficial to be able to think in terms of solutions and to be patient. A set builder uses a variety of tools and equipment for construction, such as hammers, drills and milling cutters.
There is no special study program available for set builders. Carpentry and/or other technical education is, however, a good basis for the job. Basic study programs in construction and civil engineering disciplines are offered at many secondary schools, as well as specialized study programs in carpentry and furniture making.
