Netmakers repair fishing equipment in addition to having a hand in its design and production. For instance, they can design and install nets for offshore and onshore fish farms. Netmaking is a certified trade.
As a net maker, you could work in a netmaking factory, at a fishing equipment repair shop or with other companies that specialize in equipment for the fishing industry.

• drawing fishing equipment and fish farms
• sewing and disassembling individual net parts of fishing equipment
• equip ground ropes, fastening floats and weighing down fishing equipment
• measuring fishing equipment with associated measuring instruments
• assessing the condition of fishing equipment and judging the need for repair and renewal
Netmakers need to be familiar with current laws and regulations on minimum mesh sizes, handling of fishing equipment and safety issues in the industry. It is also important to be familiar with:
• production methods for fishing equipment used in Iceland
• the shape of fishing equipment and materials for making fishing equipment
• the classification and development of fishing equipment
• the behaviour of commercial fish and their response to fishing equipment
• restrictions on authorization for the use of fishing equipment in Icelandic waters
As a net maker, it is also necessary to know the damage that fishing equipment in the sea can cause and take this into account during design and production. The work involves nets, ropes, wires, locks, chains, bobbins and lead as well as various hand tools.
Netmaking is taught at the Icelandic College of Fisheries. The average study period is three years, including internship. Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
