A mason works with concrete laying and masonry of new buildings and takes care of maintenance and reconstruction of concrete and masonry of buildings and structures. The job involves various concrete work, masonry, tiling and stone stacking as well as repair work. Masonry is a legally protected job title.

As a mason, you could work for a master mason, as a manager at construction sites, as a salesperson in a hardware store or as a consultant for reconstruction. Masons often work in collaboration with designers and other craftsmen and often specialize in certain aspects of masonry, such as maintenance work, masonry cladding, tiling and stonework or stacking.

Main tasks

• reading construction drawings and selecting the appropriate materials
• laying concrete reinforcement bars and reinforcing mesh in concrete structures
• handling the mixing and laying of concrete
• advising on selection and materials for new construction and maintenance
• overseeing the installation of precast building units

Competence requirements

A mason needs to be familiar with concrete defects and damage as well as knowing all of the most common materials used in masonry. It is important to know the basics of engineering statics, have received training in the use of the most common measuring instruments and know the laws and regulations on the protection and preservation of buildings. Masonry involves the use of various tools and machines, such as concrete mixers, wheelbarrows, trowels, spirit levels and folding machines, as well as protective clothing.

Study

Masonry study programs are offered at Tækniskólinn, Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri and Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum. The average duration of study is four years, divided into five semesters of theoretical studies and 72 weeks of internship. Basic study programs in construction and civil engineering disciplines are also available at many secondary schools. Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
