Preschool assistant

According to the National Curriculum Guide, preschool assistants work in the upbringing, teaching and care of preschool children in collaboration with other preschool employees.

As a preschool assistant, you manage children’s projects both in play and study, and plan and prioritize under the guidance of the department head or preschool director.

Main tasks

• assisting children with daily activities and promoting their independence with encouragement and praise
• participating in the reception and adjustment of children and communication with parents/guardians
• work as a group leader under the guidance of the department head on art creation, exercise, field trips and purposeful language stimulation
• providing support for children with special needs in daily work under the guidance of a special teacher or department head

Competence requirements

A preschool assistant needs to be familiar with the developmental processes of children and social formation, be able to assess the needs and well-being of children and to record comments in diaries and communication logs. The job requires good communication skills and being able to engage in constructive communication with children, colleagues and guardians.

Preschool assistants should be able to use different methods to guide children according to their age and level of development, have the knowledge and initiative to lead group work and be able to work independently and show initiative.

Study

A study program for preschool assistants is two to three semesters at the secondary school level, offered at Borgarholtsskóli and Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands.

A so-called preschool assistant gateway has also been offered in collaboration with lifelong learning centers, intended for those who have work experience or previous studies to build on.

Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
